In a recently unveiled book titled ‘Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015-2023),’ former President Muhammadu Buhari is quoted as expressing a preference for extraditing Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), rather than resorting to lethal measures. According to the book authored by his former spokesperson, Femi Adesina, Buhari emphasized the importance of subjecting Kanu to the judicial system rather than pursuing a path of elimination. The former president stated that bringing Kanu back to Nigeria for trial was a more favourable option.
The book recounts an encounter with a group known as Highly-Respected Igbo Greats, led by Mbazulike Ameachi, a first republic minister of aviation. The group appealed to Buhari for Kanu’s release, and in response, Buhari acknowledged that while the government had the option to eliminate Kanu, choosing to bring him back for trial was deemed more appropriate for all parties involved.
He further explained, “I feel it is a favour to give him (Kanu) that opportunity. The government could have mobilised to eliminate him where he was, but we did not do that. You have made an extremely difficult demand on me as the leader of this country. The implication of your request is very serious.”
Throughout the book, Buhari’s commitment to respecting the judiciary’s independence is highlighted, emphasizing the importance of allowing individuals to present their cases in court.
Additionally, the book sheds light on the challenges faced by Buhari’s government, including prayers against him by some pastors who initially campaigned for his defeat in the 2015 election. Despite facing opposition, the former president remained focused on the task of developing the country, enduring the challenges that came with the political journey.
