ASUU strike: Alumni associations appeal to FG

Worried by the incessant strike action of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Association of Nigeria Universities Alumni (ANUA) has appealed to the Federal Government to honour agreement with lecturers of the nation’s universities.

In an open letter to the Federal Government by the Chairman of ANUA, Dr Stephen Olawale Fasakin, said it was distressful that the government is yet to honour her agreement with ASUU.

Fasakin who is the National President of University of Ilorin Alumni Association in his letter said incessant strike action by university workers was capable of destroying the future of the students who supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow.

This development came as Fasakin alleged that some past presidents of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association are trying to truncate his tenure as the incumbent President of the association.

Speaking on the ASUU strike, Fasakin said it is unfortunate that despite the concerns and appeals of parents, students and organized bodies including other well meaning Nigerians at home and in diaspora who appealed to ASUU to resume so as to allow further dialogue since December, 2021, the Federal Government is yet to yield to a reasonable conclusion on the matter.

He said “This is a gross act of non-challant behaviour to the concerted efforts of the generality of the people in this country to arrest the FG/ASUU drift.

“At present, ASUU has given a month of grace to have the resolution be revisited. We pray the Federal Government does something positive about it.

“Therefore, we of the Association hereby and once again, appeal to the Federal Government of Nigeria to save the lives and future of our children which will be, negatively, affected by the strike if allowed to come up.

“Also, we want to remind the Federal Government that if these children are allowed to remain at home, perpetually, they might end up falling into the hands of politicians as thugs and even possibly join bandits and other evil-doers rampaging our nation now.”

Meanwhile, Fasakin said to stop these past presidents of the Uthe University of Ilorin, Alumni Association from convening a planned illegal and unconstitutional National Executive Council meeting, members of the National Executive Committee have approached the High Court of Kwara State to stop the meeting.
