At the meeting of APC National Executive Committee, held at the party’s secretariat this Monday, President Buhari informed the party of his intention to seek a second term. This ends the long speculation over his desire for reelection.
This declaration is coming against the advice of many prominent Nigerians to him not to seek a second term. President Buhari has by the action, shown disdain to the letter written by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and another by Ibrahim Babangida, also a former head of state, amongst others, urging him to him to put the stability and general wellbeing of the nation above personal ambition.
Also, speaking the the APC NEC meeting, President Buhari declared that the current executive of party, led by Odigie Oyegun cannot seek reelection. In his opinion, their reelection would violate section 30 (1) (3) of the party’s constitution. The section requires that ” any officer currently serving and wants to seek reelection must resign his/her appointment 30 days before the election.”
He however, stated that, if they choose to seek reelection, they maybe allowed through a waiver. However, the party is yet to take a position on any waiver.
