CAN Tasks Buhari To Nip In The Bud Threats To Christians

Musa Ude, National News Editor

CHAIRMAN, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Yakubu Pam, has called on President Buhari, to nip in the bud the ugly situation where Christians’ right to practise their faith is under threat by religious extremists.

Pam said that the activities of religious bigots from the northern parts of the country should be immediately curtailed to prevent them from plunging the country into unnecessary avoidable religious crisis. Speaking yesterday at the Northern CAN Leaders’ meeting, he noted that the 1999 constitution of Nigeria guarantees freedom of worship of any faith in any part of the federation without entertaining any fear of being attacked by individuals or groups.

Pam was surprised that some miscreants went to a Catholic Church in Benue state and killed two Priests and 17 parishioners while holding early morning Mass. As the 2019 elections draw nearer, he urged all Christians in the 19 northern states and the FCT who have attained the age of 18 and above to actively participate in the exercise to elect leaders of their choice into positions of leadership at all levels of governance.

He also drew the attention of the federal government to the issue of Miss Leah Sharibu who is yet to regain her freedom from the captivity of the Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast, adding that the Christian Community are eagerly waiting for her release and called on Buhari to arrest the activities of Fulani herders who are currently on the rampage in Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, Zamfara, Taraba and Adamawa to allow lasting peace return to those restive states.
