Gunmen In Military Uniform Whisk Away 60-Year-Old Retired Agip Staff’s Wife In Bayelsa

By Austin Oyibode, South South Bureau Chief

Gunmen dressed in military uniform on Thursday stormed the coastal city of Brass in Brass local government area of Bayelsa state,  abducting Madam Walama Friday Otikiri, the 60 years old wife of a prominent chief and retired senior staff of Nigerian AgIP Oil Company.

The incident, which occurred between 10 and 11pm on Thursday, threw the Sambo-Ama, Twon-Brass community into confusion with the gunmen shooting sporadically for over 30minutes to scare indigenes.

Sources from the community told our reporter that the abduction of Madam Walama Friday Otikiri is coming few days after an in-law to the member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. Isreal Sunmy-Goli was released from kidnappers’den.

The gunmen, according to sources, entered the community from the waters with two speed boats and shot their way in and away from the community.

Confirming the development, in a statement issued on Saturday,  the lawmaker representing Brass constituency I in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. Israel Sunny-Goli, strongly condemned the abduction of one of his constituents, Mrs. Walama Friday Otikiri by unknown gunmen.

Sunny-Goli described the abduction as not only malicious and senseless, but utterly inhuman, hence called for her immediate release from the hands of the perpetrators.

“Kidnapping has become the greatest monster,” says Sunny-Goli, “bedevilling us as a people, and it is now imperative that we sit together on a roundtable to discuss how best we can bring it into extinction.”

He pointed out that “As far as I know, kidnapping remains an alien tendency that must not be indulged in by any well-meaning individual regardless of the pecuniary benefits it may yield.

“It is against this backdrop that I wish to call on security agencies to quickly swing into action in order to rescue the innocent woman from the hand of her abductors as well as bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice.”

In another development, Hon. Israel Sunny-Goli has condoled with the family of Mr. Emite Weekse, the popular electrician who died two days ago.

It was gathered that the late Emite was electrocuted while undertaking an electrical maintenance job in Twon-Brass, headquarters of Brass Local Government Area

While expressing that Emite’s death came as a huge shock to him, the lawmaker said that “the deceased was a kind man who made hardwork and integrity his watchword, while alive.”

Sunny-Goli therefore prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest and also give his family and indeed the people of Twon-Brass the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.
