Lucky UK Man Finds £47,000 Stuffed Into Walls Of New Home

Toño Piñeiro, a builder, stumbled upon the remarkable find while working on his newly bought house in Lugo, in northwestern Spain. He discovered six canisters concealed within the walls of his property worth around £47,000. But his joy soon turned sour upon realising the cash was in Spanish pesetas, a currency no longer valid since the euro’s introduction in 2002.

The builder learned that he had missed the deadline to exchange the old notes as the Bank of Spain stopped accepting them, rendering a large portion of the loot worthless. Despite the setback, Mr. Piñeiro was able to exchange some of the money for £30,000, which he used to install a new roof. He said: “It paid for a new roof. I guess they kept these containers to avoid humidity. The last ones were somewhat damaged, but the others weren’t – they were ironed. It was incredible.”Toño revealed that the house had been deserted for forty years before he found the money, and he swiftly purchased it after spotting it listed on Facebook. He also said he intended to hold onto some of the outdated cash as a memento.
