WAEC To Release First 2018 Private Candidates WASSCE Results This Tuesday

Bunmi Oguns, in Lagos

Feelers we are getting from our usually reliable sources at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) indicate that barring any last minute hitch, the results of the first 2018 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) which was conducted for private candidates from January 29, 2018 to February 12, 2018, would be released to the public on Tuesday 13, 2017.

Stakeholders would recall that upon the approval of the Council during its 65th Annual Council Meeting held in Abuja on March 2017, for WAEC in each of the member countries to commence the conduct of an additional diet of WASSCE for Private Candidates with effective from 2018, the Management of the Council in Nigeria under the leadership of Mr. Olu I. Adenipekun decided to show leadership; by taking the first shot in implementing the Council’s decision for the conduct of the additional diet .

This, our sources say, is in keeping with the earlier promise made to the Nation by Mr. Adenipekun on the Council’s determination to release the results of any WASSCE diet within 45 days after the conduct of the examination and to issue certificates within 90 days,

If WAEC keeps its promise, as it is expected to going by its antecedents, this will mean that the results of the examination would have been released in less than 30 days after the last paper was written, and that the national office in Nigeria has beat its on deadline by 14 days, in releasing the results.

This also means that, candidates who sat for the examination should be able to check their results in the next 24 hours.

This indeed, is heartwarming, keeping in mind that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) had told the press last year that it was persuaded that the additional WASSCE diet which it approved to commence this year would help reduce the incidences of examination malpractice that has been on the increase in recent times.

He made the disclosure at the formal unveiling of the expanded examination framework in its Ikeja office, Lagos, last year.

He said that the conduct of an additional diet of the WASSCE for Private Candidates became necessary because the WASSCE for School Candidates was written first every year and the results are released before the conduct of the WASSCE for Private Candidates. Therefore, he argued; School Candidates who wished to retake the examination would have the opportunity of doing so with the Private Candidates examination.

He further Stated that, “with growing concern among Stakeholders over what they perceive as discrimination or denial of equal opportunity against Private Candidates, there has been a deluge of agitation, criticism and appeal across the West African Sub-region for Council to find a way of reducing the agony of long waiting experienced by the Private Candidates who desire another shot at WASSCE.

Olanipekun said it was this reason that the Governing Board of WAEC, after thorough deliberations on the issue, had decided to approve that National Offices of the council should commence the conduct of one additional diet every year of the WASSCE for Private Candidates
